Aircraft Support Industries Group (ASI) approached Boss Polymer to produce a custom, co-extruded industrial fender for the new A380 dock in Changi Airport. This fender was designed to be installed in the gantry, to protect the aircrafts outer surface from damage during maintenance. Boss Polymer employed their co-extrusion skills and high-tech machinery to design, test and manufacture a highly specialised, thermoplastic co-extruded fender using two separate, differently coloured materials.

The outer yellow section of the fender uses a compound that is UV resistant and flexible, allowing it to compress and protect the aircraft’s surface. The lower, black section of the fender uses a harder compound, allowing the profile to firmly grip onto the gantry.

Aircraft Support Industries Group (ASI) approached Boss Polymer to produce a custom, co-extruded industrial fender for the new A380 dock in Changi Airport, Singapore.

ASI is a world leader in the design and construction of Aircraft Maintenance Facilities, having designed and constructed over 80 aviation hangar facilities worldwide since they opened 25 years ago.

The construction of the A380 dock in Changi Airport was a joint venture between ASI and SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC). SIAEC is a global leader in aircraft MRO services (maintenance, repair and overhaul), assisting over 80 international airlines worldwide.

Co-Extruded Fender for Aircraft Support Industries
Innovative, Co-extruded Fender

ASI was responsible for the design and construction of the hanger’s maintenance gantry system of the new A380 dock. This system required an industrial fender to protect the aircrafts outer surface from damage during maintenance.

In collaboration with ASI, Boss designed an innovative, co-extruded fender using two different materials. Co-extrusion is the process of melding multiple compounds together, allowing the product to gain the various advantages of the different materials in a single extrusion. This extrusion process is highly complex, requiring an extremely high level of skill, knowledge and technically superior equipment. Using their extensive knowledge and engineering expertise, the team at Boss designed, tested and manufactured a highly specialised, thermoplastic co-extruded fender. This fender used two separate materials on the top and bottom in yellow and black.

The top yellow section of the fender uses a compound that is UV resistant and flexible, allowing it to compress and protect the aircraft’s surface. The lower, black section of the fender uses a harder compound, allowing the profile to firmly grip onto the gantry.

ASI and SIAEC were highly satisfied with the outcome of the final docking system, stating that they believe it will further enhance both companies’ reputations for providing innovative, high-end maintenance solutions for the aviation industry.
